"Entertaining Nazis: American Universities' Shameful Relationship with Hitler's Germany" at UNT on December 8

"Entertaining Nazis: American Universities' Shameful Relationship with Hitler's Germany" will be held in Eagle Student Service Center, Room 255, at 7 pm on December 8, 2011. It is free and open to the public.

In the 1930s, American universities forged friendly ties with Nazi Germany, helping the Hitler regime enhance its image in the West as it intensified its persecution of Jews and strengthened its armed forces.  Professors and studied voiced their objections, and they were harshly disciplined.

The UNT Jewish Studies Program is proud to present Dr. Stephen H. Norwood, a professor of History and Jewish Studies at the University of Oklahoma.  His lecture, "Entertaining Nazis: American Universities' Shameful Relationship with Hitler's Germany" will address the relationship between American and German universities during this period.  He will also discuss the consequences of speaking out against university administration as experienced by the dissenting professors and students.  Professors, students, and other Americans formed grassroots movements in opposition to the friendly relations with the Third Reich.
