School Ties
What: Screening at the University of North Texas of "School Ties," a 1992 sports film regarding antisemitism at a prep school. A faculty panel discussion as well as an audience Q&A will follow.

DENTON (UNT), Texas - Robert Mandel, director of the 1992 film "School Ties," will provide insight into the film's message about antisemitism when the film screens at the University of North Texas on Oct. 29 (Thursday).
The free screening, presented by UNT's Jewish and Israel Studies Program and Department of Dance and Theatre Arts, will include a pre-recorded interview with Mandel and a faculty panel discussion after the screening. The screening begins at 6 p.m. in Room 184 of UNT's Radio, Television, Film and Performing Arts Building, located at 1179 Union Circle in Denton.
Set during the 1950s, "School Ties" tackles ethnic prejudice, honorability and abuse of power. Brendan Fraser plays the role of David Greene, a working class neighborhood star-quarterback, who is recruited to play for an elite prep school. Greene quickly learns to hide his Jewish roots.
The screening is one of nine events being presented by the Jewish and Israel Studies Program during the 2015-16 academic year with the theme "The Oldest and Newest Hatred: Antisemitism-Anti-Israelism." Mandel's pre-recorded interview is with Andrew Harris, professor in the UNT Department of Dance and Theatre. Mandel, also known as a television series director, is currently on location shooting his next television show. He has directed several hit series, including "The X-Files," "Lost," "Nash Bridges," and "Prison Break." He served as dean of AFI Conservatory for nine years until the summer of 2014. Mandel and Harris were classmates at the Columbia University's School of the Arts in New York City.
Harris will join two other UNT faculty members, Professor Guy Chet of Department of History and Adjunct Professor Rabbi Geoffrey Dennis of Department of Philosophy and Religion Studies and the Jewish and Israel Studies Program, in the panel discussion following "School Ties." The evening will conclude with an audience question-and-answer segment.
